Health Properties of Spanish Mediterranean Diet

There is a good reason why I have decided to talk about the spanish diet and its health properties. The Palace of Congresses and Exhibitions of Torremolinos hosted for 3 days, 24, 25 and 26 of November The Wine and Mediterranean Food Fair  in which professionals and amateurs could enjoy the best of wine and spanish gastronomy.

We have all heard and read about the Mediterranean diet, which seems to be so popular in newspapers, magazines and especially diet books. Spain is one of more than a dozen countries on the Mediterranean Sea, enjoying lots of sunshine. Therefore, Spanish food contains a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, nuts, a huge selection of fish from the Atlantic and Mediterranean sea, as well as red meat and pork.

Let’s talk about the top reasons why should we adopt the Mediterranean diet.

There is no substitute for fresh fruit and vegetables. Spaniards eat fresh vegetable on daily basis. Whether as a snack between meals, as part of a delicious salad for lunch or as a healthy dessert, they are full of vitamins, nutrients and fibre. Whole foods like cereals, lentils and nuts form an integral part of the spaniards’ diet. Living on the Mediterranean coastline certainly has its advantages. All local food markets have fresh fish and seafood each morning lining their stalls, so there is no excuse for not consuming a healthy amount.

The key difference between the Mediterranean diet and food regimes elsewhere is olive oil. It contains dietary fibre and it is known to lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure. So cook with olive oil!

Are you a wine lover? If so, then choose a red wine! A glass a day with your evening meal is actually good for you. Known for its antioxidant properties, it contributes to a balanced diet.

On top of all the health benefits of the mediterranean diet is that it tastes delicious! Fresh salad topped with goats cheese, followed by oily fish, served with crisp leaves and fresh bread dipped in balsamic vinegar, accompanied by a  glass of red wine… So give it a try!!
