The Best Walking Routes in Nerja

Nerja, on the Costa del Sol, is a seaside resort of sandy coves sheltered by the impressive Sierra de Almijara mountains and often referred to as ‘The Jewel of the Costa del Sol’. Nerja is great place to go hiking or to take a gentle stroll through its streets. Its natural beauty makes it a nature lover’s paradise. Cauce del Chillar, la Fuente de Esparto, Tajo Almendrón, la Cuesta del Cielo… all of these places offer the visitors a pleasant hiking or walking routes in Nerja.

If you want to go to La Presa, you should travel the River Cauce del Rio Chillar, this wonderful Andalusian river walk with it´s natural pools and a series of sparkling waterfalls is one of the few exceptions where it is best walked in June, July and August, as you follow along a cool river bed in a narrow, shady canyon.

Another route you can go trekking is La Fuente del Espanto. It is a 5 kilometer trail that isn’t too difficult. It goes through pine forests and peaceful areas, and also through one that was ravaged by fire.

Another recommended route is the Peñón de los Castillejos. This route commences along the west side of the valley of the Río de la Miel (Honey River) where traditional crops such as vines, olives and almonds grow alongside subtropical crops. Lastly, there is the Ruta del Almendrón, which has incredible views. The length of this route is approximately 11 km and it takes nearly 5 hours to reach the peak.
